Who is House of Zandar?
"Through my practice, I seek to open people’s minds, inspire curiosity and start a dialogue that encourages them to become patrons of the arts and emboldens them with a sense of freedom to express themselves authentically rather than conforming to an ideal”.
Alexandra Malkin, affectionately known as Zandar, is an American multidisciplinary artist, art consultant and fashion stylist.
A graduate of the prestigious Sotheby’s Institute of Art where she obtained a Masters in Contemporary Art, Malkin also holds a BS in Design and Merchandising from Drexel University, PA and is a trained metalsmith and ceramic artist. In addition to her artworks Malkin is working on a jewelry and eco loungewear fashion collection, both of which take their creative cue from her surrealist signature and knowledge of art history.
Malkin grew up in New Jersey and began creating and designing from a very early age, the artist spent her lunch breaks in the art studio at high school drawing, creating pottery and designing jewelry which she sold to friends out of her backpack. This inherent creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and a passion to work with her hands and not be confined to a desk that has shaped her success in the art, fashion and design world.
The artist’s foray into fashion began after she graduated from Drexel, working as a personal shopper and stylist for high-end clients at New York City’s famed department store Bergdorf Goodman. Unable to deny her artist calling, she returned to school, obtaining a Masters in Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, which armed her with a deep knowledge of art theory and philosophy. Eager to learn the business Malkin began working for leading New York art galleries Michael Werner and Metro Pictures, then establishing her own art consultancy curating and selling the artwork of blue chip artists like Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Dennis Oppenheim and attending global art fairs like Art Basel Switzerland, Miami, Hong Kong, and Art Dubai to uncover burgeoning new contemporary art and attend global biennale’s including the famed Venice Biennale. This expertise and experience orbiting the epicenter of the global art world not only parlayed into her art consultancy, but the establishment of her own art practices.
Today, while focused on the creation of her own art collections, Malkin is an in demand art dealer curating private and investment art collections for clients. She also works as a stylist helping private clients and artists articulate their personal style and their brand through fashion.
Deeply ingrained in the art, fashion and jewelry world, Malkin is a respected member of the Summit and Habitas communities, groups of entrepreneurs and innovators focused on supporting the creative and arts industries through philanthropic initiatives and missions. As part of her personal commitment to philanthropy, Malkin recently curated an art therapy program for the Pitkin County Senior Services and continues providing seniors with activity packets as well as delivering weekly meals.
